Hi, I uploaded this file (File:‘Ali al Naqi.jpg) to Wikimedia Commons from this website (https://ahmedamiruddin.wordpress.com/2014/03/20/names-of-the-immaculate-twelve-imams-as-they-appear-at-masjid-an-nawabi-s-ksa/). It is a photograph of the calligraphy at Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina, probably made circa 900 AD. Is it ineligible for copyright? Thanks

Having problems with video2commons

I have been trying to use video2commons, however I keep getting an error. Error: An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: [youtube] -DR4r2AtaiM: Sign in to confirm you\xe2\x80\x99re not a bot. This helps protect our community. Learn more' I am logged in using Commons on the website, I do not use a VPN or proxy. Any assistance would be appreciated. Ask some detail of Bild 183-14059-0018

I am checking the copyright information of zh:檔案:Forth generals.jpeg on zh-wiki, but I have trouble checking the picture's detail. The picture was from Reddit. After searching, I got some info from Wikipedia for Schools. According to the site, the identifier is "Bild 183-14059-0018" by Bundesarchiv. However, when accessing the picture on the Commons, the picture was deleted. The deletion log says the picture's copyright holder is TASS instead of Bundesarchiv.

I can't access OTRS, so I want to know details - Is the zh-wiki picture "Bild 183-14059-0018"? What is the copyright status? I think the picture is now (2025) in public domain in Germany (or Russia?) but URAA-restored in the US, but I am not sure. Saimmx (talk) 17:37, 29 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ordnance maps - are they uploaded?

The National Library of Scotland has a number of Ordnance survey maps at this link. These are public domain if published before 1975 (50 years before this year), see Template:oldOS. I was looking at a couple in Lambeth I would like to use (eg), but I am unable to tell looking at Category:Maps from Ordnance Survey if this is uploaded already. Bread type

This type of bread is popular in South Asia under different names, like "পাউরুটি" (pāuruṭi) in Bengali and "डबलरोटी" (ḍabalroṭī or "double roti") in Hindi. However, it is not considered indigenous within South Asia, and considered "foreign" instead. So, I'm wondering about the type of this bread, as "পাউরুটি" or "डबलरोटी" can refer to any European bread, not just this one. Can Imgur images/videos be uploaded to Commons?

I'm looking to upload 2 videos of the recent Learjet plane crash in Philadelphia for the Wikipedia article on it. I don't know if media from Imgur is copyrighted, however. I've looked through their TOS and I'm still unsure. Just to clarify, these are not my videos.

When you see something on the web, unless you know it's free licensed assume it isn't. Imgur is a social media site hosting work of many different people. Unless the creator of the image has specifically authorized a free license, or if the copyright status is known to be public domain for a verifiable reason, it doesn't belong on Commons. Could someone else history comment be edited to remove some information?

The following file (mine) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Barajas_T4_amanecer.jpg has an edit done by Dcoetzee in which he stated the removal of watermark, and includes a name. Help renaming a file

Greetings. I need help renaming an image file. I don't know how, and don't believe an unregistered user can.

The file is misnamed.

The whole thing is laid out here.

The explanation is lengthy, and detailed, but the logic for making the change is not. The requested modification ultimately is simple (and seeks consistency with a similar existing file, more appropriately named).

I am aware the Hudson river is generally in the center of the image. The entire point of the renaming request it that: 1) that fact is completely subisidiary the totality of the image, which spans *five states* and *two countries*; there is no trace of any "Hudson River Valley" in the map (None. Neither by name, topographic depiction, or any other suggestion of such a thing being any geological reality.);
and applying the term the "Hudson River Valley" is thus exceedingly confusing to all those familiar with it and its common usage (which has a very definite context, both as "America's Rhine" and a very specific demographic region).
As such, the image name demands to be changed, eliminating confusion from its source. That is why I sought the assistance of someone who could help do so. Changing the description is helpful, but insufficient to address the problem of a misnamed image. Thank you.
Is there anyone else out there who'd like to help with this? I've renamed an image (through assistance, using some kind of request template, as at Wikipedia) in the past (some years ago) and do not recall anything about the process, just the outcome (which was entirely satisfactory). Commons can be somewhat conservative about renaming files. I think your proposed rename ("Blaeau Nova Beligica Et Anglia Nova (Detail Hudson River and surrounding regions).png") sounds fine, but perhaps the uploader will have a view. In the meantime, I don't really understand how editing the description is putting a cart before a horse. The description and file name apply independently, if you can improve a description that seems positive on its own merits. CMD (talk) 09:05, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They have no say. They surrendered their rights to the image when they posted it under that license.
As I explained, I was seeking to get consensus on the image renaming first, then change the description to reflect it. Doing the opposite indeed is cart before the horse, and could derail consensus.
Per the above. Indeed, I can do that on my own. I can't rename the file (without assistance, or direction). I have been seeking that assistance as a 1st step (as explained immediately above).
Does anyone know where the equivalent of the queue for posting article name change requests at Wikipedia is here at Commons? As I indicated, I have no idea anymore how whoever came to my aid did, or whether they simply directed me to the right place (to make a request). It was just total NBD.

Good afternoon. I have uploaded a file that is used in English and Arabic Wikipedia. This photo of Sara Chacón Zúñiga is Miss Ecuador 1930, but the photo is easily used in the Arabic and English language sections, but for Russian it had to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. @Граф Рауль Валуа: 1998 is certainly the wrong date for the photo. It is presumably from 1930, no?
Are you sure this is eligible for Commons? To be allowed here it must be either in the public domain or free-licensed, both in its "home country" and in the U.S. We don't have initial publication information, but it would be reasonable to presume that the home country would be Ecuador. If it was first published in Ecuador in 1930, it will come out of copyright in the U.S. next year (1930 + 95 + 1 = 1926), but not yet. I'm not confident that it can be safely assumed to be out of copyright in Ecuador even then, if we don't know the author (and hence their death date). If we can determine who it was, and they have been dead at least 70 years, we are good. Otherwise, I believe we have to wait 120 years. That would mean we can't have this on Commons until 2051. It is possible that you know something here that I don't, and since we are already discuss it I'll wait for your reply before starting a deletion request.
The image is on the English-language Wikipedia on the basis of permitted non-free use, based on en-wiki's Exemption Doctrine Policy. I would have to guess that it is hosted and used in ar-wiki on an analogous basis, but I do not read Arabic so I cannot confirm this. ru-wiki has an Exemption Doctrine Policy which I'm sure you can read more easily than I, so I'm just referring you to it.
In short, I believe this image should not be on Commons, but I suspect it can be added locally to ru-wiki and used there. - Jmabel ! talk 19:01, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
1998 is the date of the person's death. It's likely that I put the template in the wrong place. It's just that it's in both Arabic and English, but it wasn't included in the Russian article. There are such problems, but I know the photo itself was created in the 1930s. Public domain means that there is no copyright, either because it expired due to age, or it is not applicable because of law (e.g. US government works, works too simple to have a copyright, etc.). @AstuteFlicker: Please consult your filters log, which shows that you tried to overwrite files uploaded by other users. Please note that it is not useful to make multiple attempts. Hello user:Coelbraou, while files and contributions can indeed be deleted (which is a regular occurrence when dealing with copyright related problems), that is not possible for accounts. If any individual wants to separate himself from any Wikimedia project, he can ask for a block of his account. This amounts to a deactivation, but as stated, an account deletion is (technologically: the site's software does not offer this function) impossible.
On the other hand, mistakes in uploading that may lead to copyright issues can and will get fixed quite fast. Local administrators would only need to know which file names are concerned, those would be dealt with. Honest mistakes won't harm prospects of later contributions. Was making an article for a game called The Upturned but I stopped when I wanted to upload an image for its title because I don't really know the policy for it. It's just a standard title in the form of an image located on the game's store page, and titles like it are included in nearly every single Wikipedia article for a game there is. However, the problem is, this would definitely qualify as someone else's work, but I don't really know the policy for this kind of subject, especially since it's work very publicly available and used in many places. These cards seem to be used a lot, and clips and screenshots from video games are generally considered free-use to my knowledge, but I don't know if for something like this you might actually have to reach out to the original creator to get their permission. I think the answer has a reasonable chance of being yes, which would suck, but if not that would be pretty great, so if anyone knows anything about this that would be good. @SapphireBandit Welcome! I assume we're talking about something like Outer Wilds. That's non-free, can't be on Commons, but as you can see at [5], it's not uploaded on Commons, but on English Wikipedia, which allows non-free pics in some cases, like this, a book-cover, movie-poster etc, If it is for the use as a lead-image in a WP-article.
So, if you make The Upturned a WP-article, then (not while it's a draft) you can add a title card as lead-image. Go to Wikipedia:File upload wizard and chose "Upload a non-free file" > This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use. > This is the official cover art of a work.
I'm less sure what's considered ok concerning screen-shots etc, consider asking at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games.

Is there an educational purpose to these photos, or should they be removed (hard if they are still in non-English articles though). Just wondering. Thanks! I ran it through rsvg-convert on my laptop and it took 5 minutes at 100% CPU, which is about 5 times longer than it's allowed to take in production. I'm sure opening it in Inkscape would take about that long, but I didn't care to wait and find out. The w3c validator identifies 306 Errors, 127 warning(s). iNaturalist tool sometimes not working

I cannot figure out what is needed for Kaldari's iNaturalist2Commons script to appear in a taxon category. It appears in Category:Phedimus aizoon but not in Category:Phedimus selskianus. Do deleted files and pages actually get deleted?

I know that on the English Wikipedia, when an article or page gets deleted, it doesn't actually get "deleted"; it simply becomes no longer accessible to the public, still sitting in the server database. And any user with admin privileges could technically "undelete" a page and restore it, as well as also view the contents of a deleted page.

I want to ask, does it go the same way for Commons files and information pages? If an image here gets "deleted", does it get completely erased from the server's disk forever, or does it also only become "no longer accessible to the public", being still able to be viewed and restored by users with certain privileges? Texts on commons are handled the same way as on all other MediaWiki projects: They are stored in a database. Files are not stored in a database, but in a file system. This also is the same on commons as on all other MediaWiki projects (if the individual projects do local files at all. en.wp does for fair use files). If a file is deleted it is moved in the file system to a path that is only accessible with an account with ademin rights. There is another was of "deletion": Office actions. If a file is unlawful everywhere in the world (this mainly applies to CSAM) it is actually wiped from the file system and cannot be undeleted, as it is physically no longer present anywhere inside the storage managed by WMF. @Wolfgang Niess Leider sieht es so aus, dass Dir niemand helfen will. Du könntest Dich in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia im Mentorenprogramm melden und nach einem Mentor/Mentorin suchen. Einen Hinweis hier: Dein Uplaod File:Die 4 Gründer des Bildungsvereins Wolfgang Niess, Thomas Steinert, Peter Engelke, Ulrich Schröder (1985).jpg wird gelöscht werden (oder ist das vielleicht schon, wenn Du dies liest). Du hast beim Upload angegeben, dass das Dein Foto ist (also, dass Du hinter der Kamera gestanden hast, diese auf die abgebildeten Personen gerichtet hast und dann auf den Aslöser gedrückt hast). Aber der Dateinamne, den Du vergeben hast, besagt, dass Du selber zu den abgebildeten Personen gehörst. That sounds logical. However, there is a large number of files by the same contributor in the same situation, i.e. the audio has the article and the noun, whereas the file name has the noun only. For example in Category:Paris French pronunciation of words relating to mammals and Category:French pronunciation of words relating to mammals and probably in more places. The file names of all such files should be consistent, one way or the other. If it is considered appropriate to rename them, it should be done for all such files, not just for some files. But they should not be renamed if it goes against consensus or established practice. Many files have been there for 18 years and should not be renamed without good reason. I don't know if there are rules or guidelines for file names of pronunciation audio files. It would probably be better if that matter is handled by users familiar with that topic. If you're talking about the English-language Wiktionary page "écureuil" or the other pages that currently use the audio file File:Fr-écureuil.ogg, you could probably add any of the several other available files for that same word, for example File:LL-Q150 (fra)-Sartus85-écureuil.wav or File:LL-Q150 (fra)-WikiLucas00-écureuil.wav or File:LL-Q150 (fra)-LoquaxFR-écureuil.wav. Any one of those three examples can do, IMO. You could choose the one you prefer. The en.wiktionary page for the plural "écureuils" already has an audio file whose file name is in the plural form "écureuils". Commons also has many files for the "derived terms" linked on the en.wiktionary page "écureuil". You can find the files with a search on Commons. I suppose that you could add audio files to the corresponding en.wiktionary pages. You could probably discuss more effectively with a specific project about pronunciation files. Maybe some contributors in that field could share advice about the naming conventions and the adequate usage of pronunciation files. In the email template at Commons:Email templates there is a bit that says "as shown here: [exact URL of the file uploaded on Wikimedia Commons]". The footnote seems to indicate that the sender can simply attach the file to the email rather than upload it to Commons. Is that true? Removing watermarks from Google Books PDFs

Is it allowed to remove watermarks from (public domain, of course) PDFs obtained from Google Books and upload them onto Commons, or clean and reupload some of the existing ones that have the watermarks? I've checked some of the help pages regarding the removal of watermarks but I couldn't figure out conclusively what's the rule, and the help pages seemed to focus on images. — Phazd (talk) 04:19, 8 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong file information

I found several images that seem to contain information belonging to another file (probably a mix-up by some automated batch upload). The titles and descriptions are totally wrong. The files are:

Yes. The info is from the NLI site. Dan Hadani collection is a collection of photographs by news photography agency. It may contain mistakes.
