DPI question
[edit]Hey Jeff. I have a question for you that you might know the answer to before I post it on Pump. When we upload a 300 DPI photo is reduced to 72 dpi by default. Does the ability to require the original 300 DPI version exist on commons? Thanks for your help. --Don (talk) 04:20, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
- @WPPilot: Hey. The short answer is "there is no such ability". The images uploaded to Commons are digital-only; there are no physical versions here, so inches don't matter. Sure, I can make inferences about how big a particular image would have to be at 72 dpi (dots per inch) in order to have been truly represented, but those are just inferences. Commons and other WMF software automatically downscales images that are stored here to fit the specified windows, or presents them ginormously at purported original scale if the windows are not specified, and the global majority is using cell phones that have difficulty presenting ginormous images. Mandating a minimum resolution for use in any particular situation is therefore inadvisable, but you may certainly suggest one or more, for instance "if you want a selfie with a cutout of my image, please use the highest resolution possible to avoid pixellation", "the branding standards of XYZ Corporation require that the fine print be legible", or "XYZ DOT requires that for use on vehicles the lettering must be legible using a font that is at least four inches high". See for example the discussion of File:The Times Of The Day, by Alphonse Mucha.jpg at Commons:Help desk/Archive/2022/12#Contacting contributor / Question on resizing files, as well as {{LargeImage}}. On the opposite side of the coin, when an HDTV cameraperson tries to zoom in on a homely cross-dressed main character, the producer may exclaim "Not too close!" — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:25, 29 January 2025 (UTC)
Maybe you can help
[edit]Hello Jeff G.
User:Kmuur seems to be missing the concept of what photographs are appropriate to upload on the Commons. Since you are nice to other users, perhaps you can convey that to this user without discouraging them. Or perhaps you know more about how to handle this than I do.
