Tool for batch editing of category sort keys

[edit]

Hello. Do you know any tool or script that would allow batch editing of sort keys of categories? I could not see that feature in cat-a-lot. It would be very useful if there was one. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:16, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sanglahi86 I dunno, my apologies. I edit sort keys manually.
I'll try pinging here some users (whom I interacted before) if they know any such tool or not. @P199, Adamant1, Rosenzweig, A1Cafel, Yann, and Abzeronow: . JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 10:01, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm more into editing the descriptions manually too. I thought of Visual File Change (aka "Perform bacth task"), but apparently it won't touch category pages. --Rosenzweig τ 10:27, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I also manually edit sort keys, sorry that I don't have any information that's helpful. Abzeronow (talk) 18:41, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sanglahi86: You can use the VisualFileChange tool, select "custom replace" in the Action pulldown box. Type in the "Pattern to match" box the category name, and type in the "Text to insert instead" box the category name plus sort key. Example:
Pattern to match Text to insert instead
[[Category:Philippines]] [[Category:Philippines|Sort key]]
Hope this helps. Or let me know if you have more questions. --P 1 9 9   14:01, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @P199: . I tried VisualFileChange but it seems it allows mass editing only of files and not categories. Does the tool support batch edits of categories too? Or perhaps I just overlooked something? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 10:06, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sanglahi86: OK, maybe I misunderstood. I thought you wanted to add sort keys to file categories. It is true that VisualFileChange doesn't do batch category changes. Sorry. --P 1 9 9   13:58, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's OK. At least I learned how to add sort keys to files using VisualFileChange as you have suggested. Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 12:36, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hhhmm maybe you could do it in a semi-automated way with AutoWikiBrowser. I'm not sure how though and that's all I can come up with aside from making a bot request. So P199's suggestion of how to do it with VisualFileChange is your best bet, baring a better option of course. --Adamant1 (talk) 02:14, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much to all for your suggestions and inputs. I will be trying VisualFileChange and see how it works since I am using Linux and installing AWB in Linux is too cumbersome. Best regards to all. Sanglahi86 (talk) 09:48, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Philippine FoP with respect to buildings under construction

[edit]

Hi JWilz12345. Do you, by chance, know how the Philippine's FoP applies to buildings that are under construction? Would, for example, there be FoP issues with the most recent photos uploaded of one such building site found here? -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:08, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Creating categories containing only a single file

[edit]

Hi. Is there a policy in Commons regarding categories that contain only one file? I tried searching but could not find information on it. I have, for a long time, avoided creating categories if I expect to add only a single file or image to it. However, I also pondered that placing several images (for example, of church altars) in a broader category (like Category:High altars in the Philippines instead of Category:High altar of 'church name') would be unmanageable in the long run as the number of images increase. Also, using a broad category would make navigating the category tree to search for images much more difficult. Would it be fine to create such one-file categories, as their file content may later grow in number? Could you give some insights or suggestions? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 12:51, 24 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sanglahi86 I sometimes create categories containing at least one file if there's permanent forseeable use of such categories. For example, Category:Apo Street (Quezon City), to house one recent image of mine. Regarding the church altars, that's I cannot comment on, however. You may want to message at Commons:Village pump regarding single-file categories of specific elements or objects within churches. But of course, some of the objects are not supposed to be here on Wikimedia Commons in the first place: since we don't have Freedom of Panorama in our law (RA 8293), modern pieces of church furniture and artworks (typically from 1970s onwards) still under the copyright of their artists or craftsmen should not be here and images of such works should be nominated for deletion. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 00:57, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the insights. It is very unfortunate that this lack of Freedom of Panorama in our country exists; I sometimes wonder if there are any bills filed in Congress to amend this. Anyway, I would leave deletion of images to other able editors as I could not really judge if a specific element in an image is not old enough to remain in Commons. At least I have read somewhere in Commons that the already deleted images are not really deleted but hidden only to non-administrator users, making future undeletions possible in the event we have a Freedom of Panorama. I might ask in Village pump later about the single-file categories. Kind regards. Sanglahi86 (talk) 01:25, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sanglahi86 you may check meta:Pilipinas Panorama Community/Freedom of Panorama/Progress#19th Congress for the timeline and progress. For now, the progress is utterly disappointing and dismal: the 19th Congress House Bills 799, 2672, and 3838 as well as Senate Bill 2326 remained pending, and we have only four months or less left before this Congress closes for the mid-term elections (in which all pending bills die, according to Howdy.carabao when I talked to him about this on FB Messenger three/four years ago). Such dead bills will have to be resurrected in the next Congress, so "back to zero". The only copyright amendment bill that was approved by the lower HoR is House Bill 7600, which does not have FoP and is only focused on giving the authorities the power to block websites hosting pirated and infringing content, regardless of the websites' server locations (the Philippine version of w:en:SOPA). Unlike the other bills, this bill as well as the two counterpart Senate Bills 2150 and 2385 gain strongest support from stakeholders like telco companies (Globe), many showbiz personalities, and think-tank groups like Bantay Konsyumer (BK3) and Stratbase Philippines. Indeed it is dismal at it does not seem to be a priority of the majority of lawmakers. Thank you for the very useful link/resource and information. Sanglahi86 (talk) 12:32, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sanglahi86 see, for example, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Pedro Calungsod stained glass (cropped).jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:CubaoCathedraljf9525 13.JPG (the 2nd one, I just commenced). JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 01:44, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

DR categories, a question

[edit]

Hello, I got your friendly reminder. Will try to honour it! But I'd like to inquire about your opinion on how to categorize DR that are based upon more than the FOP rationale. An example can be seen here: Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Cinépolis Salvador Norte, where there are also scope-related issues claimed. Sometimes, I also make mass DR where I did not separate the nominee lists with section titles, only by plain text in the nomination (writing something like, in summary, "Files X Y Z should be deleted because FOP, file A because EDUSE"). What about these requests? Do you think that they should also go into the pending FOP cases? Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 07:42, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Grand-Duc you can categorize them in multiple categories. There is also Category:Scope-related deletion requests/deleted. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 07:51, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Aye. I already began to add the applicable categories myself on new DR. But I'm still pondering something: is a "kept" cat really sensible on cases like this one, Commons:Deletion requests/File:華盛頓高中高中部 夏季制服.jpg? If the purpose of FOP DR cats is to keep track of images that can be restored should the legislation change, then using the deletedcategories would make more sense when the DR's outcome is a revision deletion, even if the file itself prevails in a cropped form. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 02:04, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Grand-Duc best to discuss it at COM:VP. This needs more opinions from other users, and there should be some standard in FoP categorization for such case. It appears that at least one more user has the same opinion as yours. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contributions) 04:49, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
File:Kibawe welcome sign (Maut Sky pic) - Flickr.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
